Target Group
According to UNICEF there are approximately 30.000 street children in Accra. Official statistics give a figure for child labour of 57%; i.e. the children must make a contribution to the family income in order to secure basic subsistence. The majority of the children who sell goods on the streets are not able to go to school, or had to discontinue because of financial shortages. School and education
are not cost-free so that a great deal of poor families cannot offer their children any
kind of education.
The target group are street children, orphans, children in need and abused
children, both girls and boys from the age of 2 years. They come from all parts of Ghana.
25% of the children have at least one physically handicapped parent with whom they had lived on the streets. The orphans and children from acute emergency situations, who are taken in, are special cases referred to Kinder Paradise from the Ministry of Social Welfare, because they were unable to offer any
alternative care or support.
